What Is ePub?

I keep hearing the term ePub—what is it?

You may have seen/heard the term ePub (or Epub, ePUB, EPUB, epub) and now you are starting to pay attention…but you still aren’t sure what it is or why it would be useful to you. ePub stands for electronic publication. If you have read a book on a digital reader (iPad, Sony Reader, Nook, etc…), the book was more than likely converted to an epub format in order to be put on that device. ePub is a free and open source e-book format that has become the industry standard and can be read on a wide-variety of eReaders.

Benefits of puting your book into ePub for digital eReaders

  • Cost—cheaper to produce, cheaper to buy
  • Add hyperlinks, video, animation, sound to books (can’t do in print)
  • Good for the environment—less printing
  • Faster to produce than printed books
  • Easily updateable
  • The user can tweak the style (font, style, orientation)
  • And so much more!

Using InDesign

Adobe InDesign is the best program on the market for laying a book out for print, but what many don’t know is that you can export to the ePub format from InDesign as well.
