Where Can Someone Find Inspiration for Their Graphic Design Projects?

Posted by Marti Wedewer on June 7th, 2011

There are many ways that you can find the inspiration for your graphic design project, and each of them is equally useful as the others. There is no single way that you can find the inspiration for your project, and you should take advantage of each one to try to help you be inspired to create your beautiful design.

Many people love to walk out in nature and find something beautiful to look at. By looking at beautiful things like flowers, butterflies, trees, and other natural scenery many have found inspiration for their creations.

Another great place to find inspiration is in man made objects. Walk through the city and look around at the multitude of buildings, cathedrals, churches, skyscrapers, apartments, bridges, and other structures to find some kind of beauty and inspiration in these objects. You would be surprised how many graphic designers were inspired to create a new layout simply by looking at an apartment building or office complex, and this method of inspiration should not be ignored.

Spend some time alone contemplating the project that you are going to be doing. Don’t take anything to the drawing board yet, simply walk around and think. Give your mind room to wander, and let your subconscious create images in your mind. Make sure that you don’t direct your thoughts, but simply let your subconscious creativity flow, and you could be surprised at what it comes up with.

Often graphic designers come up with creative thoughts first thing in the morning, which is when the conscious mind is first clicking on. Spend time late at night to contemplate your project, and you will often come up with a brilliant idea as you are drifting off to sleep. Even if you don’t come up with anything as you drift off to sleep, your mind will be working on the problem overnight, and you could find yourself with the inspiration in the morning.

Exercise is an important part of stimulating your mind, and you should try to do exercise first thing in the morning before tackling a graphic design project. As your mind is stimulated your creative juices will begin to flow, and you may find yourself with a design ready to mind without even putting much thought into it.

Create a mood board or inspiration board in order to help you come up with a good design, layout, logo, or brand. Compile a collage of pictures, colors, and images that are related to what you are trying to create. This will help you begin to understand the feel of what you are going to design, and will help your mind start thinking along the lines of the project you are working on.

You can also look to other designers and professionals in your line of work for inspiration. Get the advice from a colleague or friend in the same business, or look through other blogs and websites on the internet to get some inspiration. Finding what worked for someone else can help you take their idea and use it to transform your idea into a success
